Sunnies by Mel

An online store for a Zimbabwean eyewear brand, with a separate accessories range and a checkout built for local payment methods.

The brief

What it had to solve

Mel was selling sunglasses through Instagram DMs — every order meant a back-and-forth conversation about stock, price and payment. The store had to carry two distinct ranges without feeling like two websites, and it had to let a customer complete a purchase without ever needing to message anyone.

The approach

How we built it

The two ranges were the central design problem. Sunnies and Tiny Treasures have different buyers and different price points, but putting them behind separate storefronts would have split a small brand in half. They are handled instead as distinct top-level sections sharing one identity, one cart and one checkout — so a customer who arrives for sunglasses finds the accessories without being redirected anywhere, and Mel maintains a single catalogue rather than two.

The product photography leads. Eyewear is bought on how it looks, so the layout gives images the full width of the screen rather than cropping them into a grid of thumbnails, and the typography stays quiet so it never competes with the product. Almost all of the traffic arrives from an Instagram link on a phone, so the mobile layout is the primary design rather than a scaled-down desktop one, and the store is built to load fast enough that someone arriving from a story does not leave before the first image resolves.

The outcome

What it does now

Orders no longer require a conversation. A customer can browse both ranges, see what is available, and complete a purchase without messaging anyone — removing the back-and-forth that used to sit between interest and payment. Mel updates the catalogue herself as new stock lands. The store also gives the brand a fixed address that belongs to her: an Instagram account can be restricted or lost overnight, and the entire business had been built inside one.
